How To Fix A Door Handle Spring?
A door handle spring can be fixed by tightening the handle assembly, replacing a removable spring cassette, or installing a new handle when the spring is built into the mechanism. The door should remain open during testing so a failed latch does not trap the user outside the room.

What Does the Door Handle Spring Do?
The spring returns the lever to its horizontal position after the user releases it.
Some handles contain their own return spring inside the rose or backplate. Others depend mainly on the spring inside the latch or mortise lock.
Heavy decorative levers may use both systems.
When the spring weakens, the handle may:
Hang below level
Return slowly
Feel loose

Inspect the Handle With the Door Open
Operate the lever several times.
Observe whether both sides droop or only one side. Check whether the latch retracts and returns completely.
Tighten the visible fixing screws. A loose through-bolt assembly may allow the handle to sag even when the spring is still functional.
Next, loosen the handle and remove it from the spindle. Test the latch or lock follower carefully with the correct square spindle.
When the follower returns strongly without the handles installed, the fault is likely inside the handle assembly.
When the follower remains weak or does not return, the latch or mortise lock spring may be damaged.
Remove the Handle Assembly
Photograph both sides before disassembly.
Loosen the grub screw beneath the lever when present, then slide the lever from the spindle. Remove the decorative rose or backplate cover to expose the mounting screws.
Support the opposite side while removing the through-bolts.

Fit the new cassette in the same orientation.
Reassemble the handle loosely and test its return movement before tightening all fixings. The lever should return smoothly without excessive resistance.
Overly strong springs can make operation uncomfortable and place additional load on the latch or lock follower.
When the Spring Is Inside the Mortise Lock
A mortise lock is installed inside a pocket cut into the door edge.
Its follower spring helps return the spindle and lever.
When this spring fails, the lock body may need to be removed and replaced. Internal rebuilding is not recommended unless the technician understands the lock design and has suitable parts.
Before removing the lock:
Keep the door open.
Remove the handles and spindle.
Remove the cylinder or key-operated components where required.
Unscrew the faceplate.
Withdraw the lock body carefully.
Match its case size and backset.
Confirm latch and deadbolt positions.
A new lock must align with the existing handle, cylinder, strike, and door preparation.
Do Not Stretch or Heat a Failed Spring
Stretching a small coil spring may produce temporary tension but changes its geometry and fatigue behavior.
Heating, bending, or improvising a spring can lead to sudden failure.
Ordinary wire is not a suitable substitute for a spring designed for repeated operating cycles.
When the original component is unavailable, replacing the cassette, handle set, latch, or lock body is usually safer and more economical.
Reassemble and Test the Door
Insert the spindle and mount both handles evenly.
Tighten through-bolts alternately. The handles should remain aligned without compressing the door surface excessively.
Test the lever at least several times while the door is open.
Confirm that:
Both handles return to level
The latch retracts fully
The latch extends without delay
The rose remains fixed
The spindle does not move sideways
The lock operates normally
The door closes and opens without force
Only close the door after the complete open-door test is successful.
