The three main types of concealed hinges are fully concealed or invisible hinges, concealed cabinet hinges and concealed pivot hinges. All three reduce the amount of visible hardware when a door is closed, but their structure, load direction, adjustment method and intended application are different.

The word “concealed” can create confusion in Glass Hardware purchasing. A hinge hidden inside a timber door and frame is not automatically suitable for a frameless glass panel. Buyers need to identify both the door material and the required hinge movement before selecting a product.

1. Fully Concealed or Invisible Hinges

A fully concealed hinge is recessed into the edge of the door and the frame. Once the door closes, the hinge body is hidden from view.

These hinges are frequently used on:

• Flush interior doors

• Hotel room doors

• High-end residential doors

• Wall-integrated doors

• Minimalist office entrances

Many invisible hinges use linked arms that fold into two mortised hinge bodies. Some models provide adjustment in several directions, allowing installers to correct height, side gaps and depth after fitting.

The door and frame must have enough material to accommodate the mortised bodies. Accurate routing is required, and the hinge must be selected according to the door weight, width and thickness.

This type is generally intended for timber, composite or metal doors rather than an exposed frameless glass door.

2. Concealed Cabinet Hinges

Concealed cabinet hinges are often called European hinges. The main mechanism is installed inside the cabinet and is largely hidden when the cabinet door closes.

They may be configured for:

• Full-overlay doors

• Half-overlay doors

• Inset doors

• Soft-closing cabinets

• Wide-angle cabinet openings

A circular cup is normally drilled into the rear of the cabinet door. The hinge arm then connects the cup to a mounting plate fixed inside the cabinet.

Cabinet hinges are compact and adjustable, but they are not designed to carry a full-size shower or architectural glass door. Using them outside their intended load range can lead to rapid wear or failure.

3. Concealed Pivot Hinges

Concealed pivot hinges are installed at the top and bottom of a door rather than along its side. Much of the working structure can be recessed into the floor, ceiling, frame or door.

Their vertical load path allows them to support wider or heavier door leaves when the hinge specification and surrounding structure are suitable.

They are often used for:

• Large entrance doors

• Flush interior doors

• Feature doors

• Minimalist commercial spaces

• Selected glass door systems

A pivot point can be positioned near the door edge or further toward the center. Moving it inward changes the swing path and the amount of clearance needed around the door.

Accurate top-to-bottom alignment remains critical. If the pivot axis is incorrect, the door may move unevenly or contact the surrounding structure.

Are Frameless Glass Hinges Truly Concealed?

Most Frameless Glass Hinges are not completely invisible because the hardware must grip or connect to the exposed glass. However, compact hinge bodies, top-and-bottom pivot placement and carefully matched finishes can reduce their visual impact.

Our frameless glass door hinges use compact hardware forms for bathrooms, office partitions and display spaces. Depending on the model, material options can include SUS304, SUS316 and aluminum, with satin or polished surfaces.

This distinction is important when discussing concealed hinge types for glass and interior doors. Buyers seeking a completely invisible hinge may need a framed construction with recessed hardware. Buyers seeking a clean frameless appearance may be better served by compact glass hinges or pivot fittings.

What Should Be Checked Before Ordering?

Before selecting one of the three types of concealed hinges, confirm:

• Door material

• Door thickness

• Overall width and weight

• Frame construction

• Opening angle

• Single- or double-action movement

• Available routing or glass cut-outs

• Adjustment requirements

• Indoor or wet-area exposure

• Installation access

For glass doors, hinge holes and cut-outs should be finalized before tempering. The hardware drawing and glass drawing must correspond exactly.

For timber and metal doors, the mortise depth and frame reinforcement should be confirmed before site installation.
