How Much Is Stainless Steel Per Pound?

2026-07-11

There is no single price for stainless steel per pound. The value depends on whether the buyer is asking about scrap, raw sheet, tube, bar, finished hardware, or a fabricated product.

Grade, nickel content, molybdenum content, thickness, finish, order quantity, processing, location, and market conditions all affect the final price.

Current Scrap Price Examples

As of July 3, 2026, one U.S. market tracker reported an average stainless steel scrap price of approximately $0.53 per pound. This is a broad scrap-market figure, not the price of new stainless steel or manufactured hardware.

A recycling center may pay different amounts according to the exact material and preparation. One published example listed approximately:

Scrap CategoryExample Price per Pound
Prepared SUS304 stainless steel$0.30
Unprepared SUS304 stainless steel$0.15
Prepared SUS316 stainless steel$0.40

These figures are local recycling prices and can change without notice.

Why SUS316 Is Often More Valuable

SUS316 contains molybdenum, which helps improve resistance to chloride-related corrosion. Its alloy composition and raw-material cost are generally higher than those of SUS304.

For this reason, clean and correctly identified SUS316 scrap may receive a higher recycling price than SUS304.

The same difference can affect the cost of new:

  • Tubes

  • Plates

  • Handles

  • Hinges

  • Brackets

  • Lock bodies

  • Fasteners

  • Bathroom fittings

Scrap Price Is Not Product Price

A finished stainless steel door handle cannot be priced by multiplying its weight by the local scrap rate.

A manufactured component also includes:

  • New certified material

  • Tube or plate processing

  • Cutting

  • CNC machining

  • Drilling

  • Welding

  • Grinding

  • Satin finishing or polishing

  • Assembly

  • Screws and gaskets

  • Inspection

  • Packaging

  • Factory overhead

  • Export logistics

A small precision hinge may cost more per pound than a large simple tube because it requires more machining and assembly.

What Changes the Price of New Stainless Steel?

Grade

SUS201, SUS304, SUS316, ferritic stainless steel, and specialty alloys have different material costs and performance.

Product Form

Sheet, plate, coil, bar, tube, wire, casting, and forged components are priced differently.

Surface Finish

Mill finish, satin, brushed, polished, mirror, PVD, and coated surfaces require different processing.

Dimensions and Tolerances

Thin decorative components, precision-machined lock parts, or custom tubes can involve greater manufacturing difficulty.

Quantity

Large repeat orders may reduce setup, purchasing, and packaging costs per unit.

Nickel and Molybdenum Markets

Stainless steel prices can change with alloying-metal costs, regional supply, energy, freight, and demand.

Destination Market

Freight, tariffs, documentation, packaging, and certification can change the landed cost.

How Hardware Buyers Should Request a Quote

For accurate pricing, provide:

  • Product drawing or model

  • Stainless steel grade

  • Dimensions

  • Surface finish

  • Required quantity

  • Accessories

  • Packaging method

  • Target market

  • Testing requirements

  • Delivery destination

Requests such as “What is the price of one pound of stainless steel hardware?” are too broad for a reliable quotation.

Our Stainless Steel Hardware Supply

We manufacture bathroom accessories, glass-door hardware, door fittings, Furniture Hardware, Handrail Brackets, toilet cubicle components, and related products. The factory supports R&D, manufacturing, sales, OEM, and ODM services. (dll-hk.com)

Selected products are available in SUS304 or SUS316 with satin or polished finishes. (dll-hk.com)

For project pricing, we evaluate the complete component rather than using only weight.

Understanding the Number

Current U.S. stainless steel scrap may trade around a few tenths of a dollar per pound, but new stainless material and finished hardware cost considerably more because they include alloy quality, processing, surface treatment, inspection, and packaging.

The most useful comparison is not price per pound alone. Buyers should compare material grade, dimensions, finish, function, durability, and total delivered cost.
