What Metal Finishes Are Available for Hardware?
Metal hardware finishes include satin, polished, mirror, brushed, matte, plated, painted, powder-coated, and physical vapor deposition surfaces. The available finish depends on the base material, component geometry, intended environment, required color, and manufacturing process.
For glass door hardware, shower fittings, handles, Locks, railing brackets, and Furniture Hardware, the finish affects appearance and maintenance. It may also contribute to surface protection, but it does not replace correct material selection.

Satin and Brushed Finishes
Satin and brushed finishes use controlled abrasive lines to create a soft, directional metal texture. The two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, although manufacturers may define different roughness levels.
These finishes are common on stainless steel because they:
Reduce strong reflections
Hide light fingerprints
Coordinate with modern interiors
Make minor handling marks less obvious
Provide a consistent architectural appearance
The brushing direction should remain uniform across visible components. Handles, hinges, and locks installed on the same door can look mismatched when their grain directions or roughness levels differ.
Polished and Mirror Finishes
Polished hardware has a smooth, reflective surface. Mirror polishing takes this process further to create a highly reflective finish with minimal visible texture.
These finishes are used for decorative glass entrances, hotel bathrooms, luxury residential hardware, retail interiors, and products coordinated with bright fixtures.
Polished surfaces require careful packaging because scratches, fingerprints, and rubbing marks are easy to see.
Matte Finishes
Matte hardware has low reflectivity and a visually soft surface. A matte appearance may be produced through bead blasting, fine brushing, coating, plating, or another controlled process.
The exact method should be stated because “matte” only describes appearance. A bead-blasted stainless steel surface, matte powder coat, and matte PVD coating have different properties and cleaning requirements.
PVD Finishes
Physical vapor deposition applies a thin decorative and functional coating under controlled vacuum conditions. PVD can create colors such as:

Gold
Rose gold
Bronze
Champagne
Graphite
Copper tones
PVD finishes are used when stainless steel hardware requires a colored metallic appearance. Performance depends on substrate preparation, coating chemistry, process control, component geometry, and service conditions.
A PVD surface can still be scratched by abrasive cleaners or hard objects.
Electroplated Finishes
Electroplating deposits a metal layer onto the component through an electrochemical process. Depending on the base material and product, plated finishes may create chrome, nickel, brass, copper, or other appearances.
Plating quality depends on pretreatment, coating thickness, adhesion, coverage, and corrosion testing. Recesses and complex shapes may require special attention to achieve uniform deposition.
Powder-Coated Hardware
Powder coating creates a cured organic film over the metal. It provides a broad range of solid colors, gloss levels, and textures.
Black, white, gray, and custom architectural colors are common. Powder coating can be useful for door handles, brackets, frames, and selected furniture hardware.
Coating thickness should be considered at threaded areas, moving connections, and tight assembly interfaces. These areas may require masking or added clearance.
Antique and Decorative Finishes
Antique brass, aged bronze, distressed copper, and similar decorative finishes are designed to create controlled color variation or a traditional appearance.
Because these finishes intentionally contain visual variation, buyers should approve a range sample rather than one small reference piece. Hand-finished products may show greater unit-to-unit variation than satin stainless steel or standard powder coating.
Selecting a Finish for the Environment
Bathrooms and shower enclosures require finishes that tolerate humidity, water spots, cleaning, and frequent handling.
Exterior railings and door hardware face rain, pollution, sunlight, salt, and temperature changes. Coastal installations may require SUS316 base material and a finish specifically evaluated for that environment.
Furniture and cabinet hardware often prioritize touch comfort, appearance, color matching, and scratch behavior.
The base material should be selected before the finish. A decorative coating cannot permanently compensate for an unsuitable substrate in an aggressive environment.

Terms such as silver, gold, satin, matte, or black are too broad for a controlled project order.
