Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, notched, or reshaped after the tempering process, whether the door hardware has already been installed or not. Cutting or drilling breaks that carefully balanced stress pattern. Instead of producing a clean new edge, the panel may fracture into many small pieces. ASTM C1048 also states that heat-treated flat glass cannot be cut after tempering, although holes, notches, cutouts, and bevels can be prepared beforehand.

Minor grinding is not a dependable correction either. Edge damage is particularly risky because the edge is already a sensitive part of a tempered glass panel.

What Should Be Completed Before Tempering?

• Handle or Lock hole diameter

• Hole-to-edge distances

• Notch dimensions

• Door opening direction

• Required corner and edge treatment

• Gaps between the glass, wall, seals, and floor

• Positions of clamps, brackets, guides, or support bars

Hardware drawings should be approved together with the glass drawings. Relying on a general sketch can create costly problems because two hinges with a similar appearance may use different cutout dimensions.

What If the Hardware Is Already Installed?

Stop using the door if the panel does not align correctly or the fittings place visible stress on the glass. Do not loosen the hinge and attempt to enlarge the hole with a drill or grinder.

The installer should first determine whether the problem comes from the glass dimensions, hinge position, wall alignment, gasket placement, or adjustment of the hardware. Some alignment issues can be corrected within the hinge’s documented adjustment range. A wrong hole, notch, or overall glass size normally requires a replacement panel.

Existing hardware may sometimes be reused after removal and inspection, provided it still matches the replacement glass and has not been damaged. Gaskets, sleeves, screws, and other contact components should also be checked before reinstallation.
